On the morning of Sunday December 20, 2015 our beloved sister Heidi took her final breath as she listened to “How Great Thou Art” being played and sung to her. By her side was her sister Alda, and one of her very best friends Anna who held her hand.
Heidi was predeceased by her twin brother Hjalli at just three days old, she felt his absence throughout her entire life (what an awesome reunion this must have been). Also by her father Steini (1998), mother Herbie (2007), sister Inga (1987), and brother Eric (2004). She is survived by her sisters Alda, Thora (Dave), and sister-in-law Sharon and by her brothers Arni (Ruth), Kris (Cathy), Carl (Wendy), David, and Joe. Heidi will also be greatly missed by her friend Harry.
Heidi is also survived by 19 nieces and nephews Shauna (Dan), Paul, Kevin (Cristina), Tania (Frank), Darrin (Laura), Kara (RJ), Jason (Christine), Lisa, David (Jaimie), Danny (Robyn), Jared (Allison), Steven (Keerath), Kelly (Geni), Karly (Alec), Andrea, Trevor, Michael, Dale, and Rylee as well as 23 and counting great nieces and nephews.
Heidi was born on March 31, 1964 to Steini and Herbie Thomasson. She grew up in St.Vital attending Hastings Elementary and Junior High, and then graduated from Dakota Collegiate. Throughout her working career she had various jobs ranging from working in a kitchen preparing meals for seniors to working in a video store. She worked at The Winnipeg Clinic for ten years where she formed lasting friendships. Finally Heidi worked at HSC as helper in the maintenance department and just received her 15-year service pin. She started out in the exterior grounds keeping and advanced into the HVAC department. Any job Heidi did she gave it her all.
Heidi could be very creative and had many hobbies. Her creativity varied from writing very long letters, to many a night spent decorating cakes for special occasions where every cake was just perfect. She enjoyed making porcelain dolls and her home was a perfect display of her talent as there were dolls everywhere. Many of us were even lucky enough to be given one. Heidi loved being with nature and working outside gardening or just enjoying long walks in the country. She was never afraid to tackle any project that she had the chance to and could be counted on to lend a hand any time she was asked… whether it was in the kitchen (making pönnukökur, vínarterta, lasagna or other dainties) or with outside work. Also blessed with having the Thomasson procrastination gene, as the kids waited patiently around the tree, she was always up in her room on Christmas eve wrapping presents just in time for them to be placed beside the tree and unwrapped right away.
Heidi was a true and loyal friend. This was quite evident this past week with all the visitors ranging from childhood friends (Robyn, and Lee), to her Winnipeg Clinic friends (Anna, Deb, Jen, and Barb) as well as her many co-workers from HSC. Heidi‘s long-lasting friendship was displayed to us when a former co-worker drove the winter roads from Swift Current to see her this past week. We are sure these visits were greatly appreciated by Heidi.
Heidi meant a lot to many people and they meant a lot to her! Many things will make us think of her… a hot chocolate overflowing with whipping cream before bed… a moose… Eeyore… Can of Coke… a plate of pönnukökur (some rolled with whipped cream and some with brown sugar)… or just a quiet giggle. She will be remembered with love.
